During my morning walk a neighbor was walking an adorable puppy. I can’t walk past a puppy without petting it, so I struck up a conversation. He introduced himself as Jeff Hanna. I said, “Oh, of course I know your work.” In addition to being in the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, Jeff has written huge songs, including co-writing Rascal Flatts’ “Bless the Broken Road.” He mentioned that he’s married to Matraca Berg. When he said that, I broke into Matraca’s biggest cut, “Strawberry Wine.”
So, here’s the weird part …
A couple of hours later I was driving back from a meeting on Music Row and guess what comes on the radio: “Strawberry Wine!” I probably haven’t heard that song in 10 – 15 years! What a GREAT recording (by Deana Carter) of a GREAT song! But how bizarre to hear it on the radio right after singing it for the writer’s husband!
